Mr. Daniels seems to be exactly what Ally has been waiting for, in terms of receiving some help. Has there been that one person in your life that has helped you open up about a a problem you were or are facing? Tell about your relationship with this person and explain how they have helped you with your problem.
I have been thinking a lot about Ally and her predicament she is having with herself and people at school. It makes me sad that she thinks she is dumb and is afraid to talk to anyone about her troubles. In 4th grade I too struggled with reading and was "sent" to a special teacher who was going to "fix" it. This was a scary & confusing time for me. I didn't know this teacher I would be working with 3 times a week. I was also feeling different from all my friends in my class. However, Miss Sloan, my 4th grade teacher, sat me down in the library one day to have a heart to heart talk. She let me know that I wasn't different or stupid. That learning came in all different forms and at all different times in people's lives. She reassured me that with a little effort, a little help, and a lot of support from her and my parents this "problem" I was having would get better. To this day Miss Sloan is my favorite teacher I have ever had. She was helpful and I could trust her. And she was right with a little help and a lot of practice on my part the "problem" did eventually get better. I love to read to this day! Not all things come easily to all people, all the time. But it is my belief that there is always someone to help you, if you let them!
My hope for Ally is that she finds that someone in Fish in a Tree, so she too can see how amazing she & her life can be. While you are blogging today about your initial thoughts to our Global Read Aloud book choice, Fish in a Tree, by Lynda Mullaly Hunt, I would like you to reflect on something that hasn't come easy to you. What does that feel like? Who helped you through a rough time? Has the problem be solved or are you still working it out? Reflect on your self so you can make better connections to Ally! |
